1937年，“七七事变”后，八路军奉命东渡黄河。郑川率独立团开赴前线，激战平型关、获得嘉奖；而国军失利遭批评，周治国不服郑川。战乱中，郑川与失去音讯的妻子黎英偶遇，在黎英帮助下，独立团突袭机场，支援了正面战场。日军受困转而突袭娘子关，太原沦陷。独立团以太岳山为依托创建抗日根据地，首先剿灭土匪，赢得百姓拥护，却引得周福源等顽固派不安，大搞摩擦，黎英牺牲。为顾大局，独立团洒泪撤离。日军随即发动中条山战役，国军惨败，周治国捐躯，太岳沦陷。独立团重新开辟根据地，郑川指挥“太岳围困战”。作曲家冼星海目睹战士壮举，创作《黄河大合唱》。经历鏖战，“围困战”获胜利，最终打败了日本，反法西斯战争胜利。
