1927年，北伐接近胜利。此时，民族资本家林桐箴与操持青帮的顾绍棠正开始一个更大的回合较量。 林桐箴的儿子林唯贤酷爱音乐，一心只想发掘江南民谣并推向世界。林唯贤与幼时好友、军官家庭的胡奕重逢，并将在码头善意救助来沪闯荡的山东青年公孙雷介绍认识，从此三个年少青年成为莫逆之交。 一个偶然的机会使林唯贤和公孙雷同时爱上了顾绍棠的爱女顾佳慧，可是佳慧只悄悄地对林唯贤萌生爱意。当红的越剧名伶晴宇是林桐箴的相好。林桐箴与顾绍棠在商场激烈地胶着着，老谋深算的顾绍棠重金收买晴宇，从而得知林桐箴的全盘计划，最终在股市上彻底击垮林桐箴…… 林桐箴愤而自杀。此时国共分裂，最终选择国民党阵营的胡奕被迫抓捕被诬告通共的林唯贤。公孙雷为出人头地，向顾绍棠告发了林唯贤的出逃路线。佳慧以死威胁，顾绍棠、公孙雷被迫放林唯贤一条生路。 老管家岳乐带林唯贤回到老家江南小镇。林唯贤一蹶不振，走投无路的他被迫进到镇上有名的鸿计米店当学徒。尝尽世态炎凉，林唯贤终于变得冷漠无情。恰巧此时，已是军官的胡奕率兵经过。林唯贤借胡奕筹集饷粮之机，终于成功地将鸿计米店收为己有，踏上重振林家家业之路。胡奕剿共，遭伏击的红军重创，被打残腿。 10年后， 已经积聚经济实力的林唯贤回沪。此时顾绍棠已成上海商界和青帮的无冕之王，公孙雷已是顾绍棠的得力助手，胡奕奉重庆之令潜回上海，跟汪伪特工组织76号展开了一番当时沪上闻名的特工战。 晴宇转投顾绍棠的怀抱，但私下与公孙雷偷情。此时顾绍棠借特工大战的混乱局面，暗使公孙雷除掉哈里登，以独霸商界。这时林唯贤正借机会接近公孙雷的妹妹、当红明星公孙令婉。 公孙雷发现林唯贤回沪，怂恿不明底细的妹妹令婉继续同林唯贤交往。岳乐的女儿纤纭见林唯贤与令婉相好，黯然神伤。胡奕逃避公孙雷的追捕，不期与纤纭重逢，胡奕对纤纭深爱依然，纤纭终于心下温暖。 顾绍棠依靠心腹黑三查出出卖自己的竟是公孙雷，令佳慧解除与公孙雷的婚约。但毕竟还有更大的敌人，顾绍棠被迫先联合公孙雷以对付前来复仇的林唯贤。公孙雷终于抓住胡奕，为了实现个人的野心，又将他悄然放走。 公孙雷与林唯贤终于重逢。两人坦言愿意联手，一明一暗，在商场彻底击败顾绍棠。果然，顾绍棠被迫自杀。晴宇被公孙雷拒绝而因爱生恨，向日方告发公孙雷。公孙雷杀人灭口，并强迫佳慧如约完婚。此后公孙雷将精力投向对付林唯贤。林唯贤为捍卫民族商业的大旗，继续扩大实业。公孙雷和林唯贤之间展开一轮惊心动魄的商战。最后，公孙雷动用各方势力将林唯贤逼至绝境。林唯贤和他的实业之梦化为蘖磐。公孙雷得以独霸上海滩，踌躇满志的他与佳慧完婚。新婚之夜，风雨大作，佳慧终于斧劈公孙雷，然后冲入茫茫雨中。 又是在十六铺码头，一个酷似当年林唯贤的富家少年下船，意外救助一位酷似当年公孙雷的贫寒少年，新一轮的人生故事再度在上海滩展开…… 苏州河边，夕阳欲坠。胡奕和纤纭乘小木船离开，欲牵手天涯。二人感怀地将先前林唯贤整理的民歌乐谱一一散落河中。乐谱随水飘零，那首似淡似烟的《茉莉花》歌声再度苍凉响起。歌声中，小木船越飘越远了……

Whenever I see La Paura I think of it as a companion piece to Eyes Wide Shut, or maybe it is the other way around. Adultery makes both films tick but in different ways. I think Phillip French was right on the money when he pointed out a Wizard of Oz thing in Kubrick's last work. Like Dorothy, Tom and Nicole go through fantasies and nightmares and at the end Dorothy's reassuring childish motto there's no place like home is ironically updated to the adult circumstantial adage there's no sex like marital sex. Kubrick's take is intellectual, he never leaves the world of ideas to touch the ground. He taunts the audience first with an erotic movie and then with a thriller and refuses to deliver either of them. He was married to his third wife for 40 years, until he died. Rossellini was still married to Ingrid Bergman when he directed La Paura; they had been adulterous lovers and their infidelity widely criticized La Paura is a tale, a noirish one. The noir intrigue is solved and the tale has a happy ending. The city is noir; the country is tale, the territory where childhood is possible. The transition is operated in the most regular way by car, a long-held shot taken from the front of the car as it rides into the road, as if we were entering a different dimension. Irene (Bergman) starts the movie we just see a dark city landscape but her voice-over narration tells us of her angst and informs us that the story is a flashback, hers. Bergman's been cheating on her husband. At first guilt is just psychological torture but soon expands into economic blackmail and then grows into something else. From beginning to end the movie focuses on what Bergman feels, every other character is there to make her feel something. Only when the director gives away the plot before the main character can find out does he want us to feel something Bergman still can't. When she finds out, we have already experienced the warped mechanics of the situation and we may focus once again on the emotional impact it has on Bergman's Irene. In La Paura treasons are not imagined but real, nightmares are deliberate and the couple's venom suppurates in bitter ways. Needless to say, Ingrid has another of her rough rides in the movies but Rossellini doesn't dare put her away as he did in Europa 51, nor does he abandon her to the inscrutable impassivity of nature (Stromboli). His gift is less transcendent and fragile than the conclusion of Viaggio in Italia. He just gives his wife as much of a fairy tale ending as a real woman can have, a human landscape where she can finally feel at home. Back to the country, a half lit interior scene where shadows suggest the comfort of sleep. After all, it's the fairy godmother who speaks the last words in the movie.
